Our idea for the live show "The Name Of The Game" is a live game show where generations of forms of gaming are brought together for a half hour of funny, puzzling and exciting entertainment. The Crystal Maze is similar to The Name of The Game in many ways, it does have the previously listed qualities included in it but many more as well. The Episode of The Crystal Maze I watched was Series 6 Episode 6: "Celebrity Crystal Maze", this episode was first broadcast in July of 2019. The Crystal Maze is a game show where a team of usually 5, compete in different themed lands to complete challenges solving puzzles, riddles and timed trials. Once completing these tests the contestants are given "time crystals" that secure them time in a dome where they must catch gold tickets that guarantee they will go home with the money they've raised through the game. However if they catch more silver tickets than gold, they lose the money. The show is presented by comedia...
TV News Project Evaluation

Project Evaluation: From the moment our group began developing “U2D News” it was unanimously decided that we would be focussing on stories that concerned people in our age group, mostly big issues and sometimes a way to lessen these issues with good alternative mindsets. We decided that the best target audience to target would be the age range of 16-40 years old and we would go for a light and vibrant colour palette, commonly used on quick, digestible news programmes. We then began researching into issues that were targeting our demographic and we noticed that the most relevant and growing story would be that on the rise of spiking’s in the UK and how they have been affecting people. We also decided we needed to focus on a climate change-based story, so we chose sustainable fashion as a subject, a light but still serious story that people can actively engage in. We then began researching the topics and figuring out the structure of the show, influenced by BBC Newsround and on...

Shots of alcohol can be added to drinks to make them stronger. This causes someone to get drunk much quicker than expected. Rohypnol (or Roofie) and Gamma Hydroxybutyrate (GHB) are the most commonly known ‘date-rape’ drugs. Both drugs can be used to commit physical and sexual assaults as they can sedate or incapacitate a victim, making them more vulnerable to attack. Recreational drugs like Ecstasy, Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD), Ketamine and other ‘party-drugs’ are sometime...

Panasonic & Green Screen Workshop: In our Panasonic & Green Screen Workshops we had the chance to really get to terms with some new equipment. In the Panasonic camera workshop, we got taught the basics, where which button was, how the menu works and some important formatting tips. We spent the majority of the workshop setting the camera up before taking it out to test shoot as this is more complicated than any camera we’ve used before. We shot a brief test intro for our news show we have been devising, U2D News. The footage we shot came out well however we shot in front of a predominantly white background which messed with the white balance and lighting. However, we will not be using a background like this when it comes to our final project. The next day we worked on our Green Screen skills, we spent a lot of time setting up and making sure our lighting bounced well off the model, who was also me. We faced a challenge of setting up the lights in a way that didn’t refl...

Analysis of entire news programme relevant to own project: News Programme: Newsround Episode 08/10/21 Let’s start with the structure of Newsround, I went into this with some previous knowledge on the structure of a Newsround episode, as in one of my previous blog posts I went into the structure of Newsround a little bit. The show begins with the Anchor making a silly and light-hearted welcome to the viewer, already putting the viewer in a relaxed vibe. After a brief 10 second graphic intro with the Newsround logo and jingle, the show starts with a serious story about footballer Marcus Rashford and the important work he’s been doing for people on universal credit. This story’s tone results in it being first as it would be a weird inclusion when right next to the light stories about general interest subjects. We then get a website plug, promoting a written story on a similar topic, before going into a story in the middle ground of tone, fairly simple story about football manage...

BBC News Live News Item: BBC News News at Ten Episode date: 04-10-21 This BBC News Live Item is focused on The Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp Shutdown, which is at this time known as the longest time these social net works have been shutdown for. This report was made whilst the subject was still not resolved, which means some of the material in this report may not be the same in future tense. BBC News Live Items follow a very specific structure, but it is an affective one to use. When the Anchor introduces the story, he almost tells the whole thing, but instead of leaving it at that, we get to hear more detail of how these events transpired. As the story begins, we see relevant imagery, B-roll of a globe showing connective sparks coming out of every country slowly fade away as we see the companies’ responses to shutting down. We then get the rundown of the situation from an expert in the form of a zoom interview. Hearing them talk about this so easily makes you as an audienc...

Newsround News Package Analysis: Newsround Episode Date: 04-10-21 Newsround is commonly known as a news show primarily made for children from around 6-12 years old, the stories shown on the show usually range from cute animal facts, big scientific events and a positive movement or message that is being spread. However, from time to time, they switch to telling stories that you would hear on more adult news programmes too. Such as the recent Petrol shortage crisis and climate change stories. However, the main things that make Newsround an affective and engaging package are its structure, editing and presenters. The show opens with a brief introduction and welcome from the Anchor, usually very warm and friendly, setting the tone for the show being relaxed but to the point. We then get the headlines, which are all very different in tone and subject but work in the order they have been told to be presented in. The 2 main segments are around 2-3 minutes long and the lighter feat...
Inspirational People – COVID-19 Project Evaluation

This project has been a mixed bag for certain. Obviously, it being the first thing we have gotten to shoot all together was definitely a new experience. For the most part, Pre-Production went rather smoothly, we had to cancel our original idea we had due to the contributors we had asked for not responding to us, but we found other contributors very quickly who fitted perfectly into the centre of what the documentary was about, Inspiring artists persevering through the COVID-19 lockdown. The script came together quite quickly and easily, Storyboards and shot lists too and consent forms from the contributors were signed very quickly. So, then it came to test shooting in our LED Lighting workshops, which definitely helped us work out some of the troubles we may face whilst shooting indoors, especially with lighting. We rehearsed the interviews from the script with someone taking on the role of the interviewee and the interviewer. We decided on using very bright white LED lights ...

As previously mentioned in my post about the workshop films we created, we encountered a few setbacks when it came to time and balanced lighting. The workshop films acted almost as our test shoots because we are going to be filming in a very similar space to where we shot these for the segment with Dance teacher Zoe. We had problems with balancing the light which we sorted and figured out in our second workshop but how are we going to combat that when shooting happens? Well Zoe’s location has got a very large window looking over it and the room we will be shooting in does have a lot of mirrors, however, there are blinds just above the windows where we can cast the light out of the shot and light up the shot for the most part entirely with indoor and LED lights. As for the mirror problem, we can easily frame the shot, so the camera isn’t seen on the mirror, via positioning it vertically. Seen here is the set up for our segment with Karl Fletcher. We didn’t get the chance to ...

Zoe Segment: For the Segment of the Documentary based around Zoe I thought because dance can be such a wild and energetic for of art, we should capture that via the cinematography and the way we edit the film. This will aso help capture the feel of how it was before the COVID-19 pandemic, everything happening at once, energetic, people being free. Once Zoe starts to get into her story during the pandemic, everything will suddenly slow down and become more contemplative as she tells her story. I pulled the inspiration for the way to present this from documentary films such as Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010) & Bananaz (2008) which both are about people who work in different forms of art, shot and edited to a high speed that captures their way of life also sometimes using very guerilla approaches to how they are shot. As well as that Youtube videos of dance groups tend to also capture this to make you feel like your there with the dancers. It overall becomes very visceral an...

Whilst participating in the LED Lighting Workshops, we took the opportunity to rehearse some of our interviews and practice our set ups for shot types for interviews, as well as testing out LED lighting. At first, we decided to go with browner hues on our lighting set up to contrast our very bright location we were shooting in. There were a lot of white walls and windows so we thought at first that if we went for a standard white light, it wouldn’t make much change and it would just blend into the rest of the background. However, upon further notice we realised it just made a very clashing contrast with the rest of the shot, so therefore, we changed it to a standard white LED light and contrary to what we thought, it worked and actually made the interviewee pop out a lot better in the rest of the frame. In the first workshop however it took us the majority of time we had to set up, so by the end of it, we only had about 5 minutes of footage shot. But this was also our first t...
Analysis of Observational Documentary: Dougie Wallace: What do artists do all day?

Dougie Wallace: What do artists do all day by Jack Cocker is a wild and visceral ride through the mind and work ethic of photographer, Dougie Wallace. At first glance Dougie just seems like an average normal guy but as soon as the following few seconds of the opening of the documentary progresses, that opinion is gone within a flash. As we see Dougie rise up from bed, completely naked and heading into his living room to get ready to take to the streets. Dougie has a very different and ethically questionable technique of getting the photographs and art that he wants; he’ll go up to random people on the street and stick his big DSLR camera in their faces and snap up a picture. Some may laugh, some may just give him a weird look and move on or some will become hostile and try to attack and destroy Dougie’s cameras. Dougie reminds me in particular of street artist and documentary filmmaker Thierry Guetta who was the focus of the 2010 documentary “Exit Through the Gift Shop”, a man who wi...

Magnolia – Paul Thomas Anderson: Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia is his third film and it is truly where his trademark style fully comes into play. It tells seven interconnecting stories about family, love, loneliness and lies which all tie into an unpredictable and biblical finale. The film is large in its scope and could be almost described as an “Epic”. It tells all of these stories over a three-hour run time allowing us to grow to know the characters as is customary with Anderson’s films and with so many characters, it makes sense for this length. Anderson’s trademark visuals usually consist of fast paced dolly shots, ethereal crane shots and even static long takes allowing his actors to just perform and sell the scene they are performing. Anderson’s storytelling has changed dramatically since this film and some of his other early projects, his projects now tend to be high concept period pieces rather than his previous intelligent and ambitious Comedy Dramas. Anderson’s appro...

It’s safe to say the final completed project of Tell Me No is far from what we expected it to be, but that is definitely not a bad thing. Obviously due to COVID-restrictions, we had to change it up a bit and make the story fit a digital setting where we could still shoot it. We decided to change the project to a trailer, we chose this because we realised that it would be difficult to make a two person zoom call visually interesting and excitingly edited, whilst with the trailer we could keep up the tense energy we wanted in the originally planned scene. This was a very well thought out decision by us and I think we have come out with a very good final project. I took on the role of Director as had been planned for the scene we were going to shoot, prior to filming I had to put together a storyboard for the trailer which would help guide us through shooting and help me capture an Idea of what to shoot and how to go about shooting it. We shot the zoom conversations all back-to-back o...
