BBC News Live News Item
BBC News Live News Item:
BBC News
News at Ten Episode date: 04-10-21
This BBC
News Live Item is focused on The Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp Shutdown, which
is at this time known as the longest time these social net works have been shutdown
for. This report was made whilst the subject was still not resolved, which
means some of the material in this report may not be the same in future tense. BBC
News Live Items follow a very specific structure, but it is an affective one to
use.
When the
Anchor introduces the story, he almost tells the whole thing, but instead of
leaving it at that, we get to hear more detail of how these events transpired. As
the story begins, we see relevant imagery, B-roll of a globe showing connective
sparks coming out of every country slowly fade away as we see the companies’
responses to shutting down. We then get the rundown of the situation from an
expert in the form of a zoom interview. Hearing them talk about this so easily
makes you as an audience member think that this is the person to trust.
We then see
some Vox Pops of the public talking about the sites shutting down. The members
of the public chosen look like the demographic that would be using the sites daily
and/or have some form of understanding of how they work. However, the opinions
remain diverse as well as the people featured in it.
The reporter
then finally references a similar event to this and ends the report with a sly
remark about Twitter seizing the moment and taking Facebook, Instagram and
WhatsApp’s users. This reminds the viewer that this is quite a light story in comparison
to other stories that might be being reported at the time. We then go back to
the studio where the anchor talks to an international correspondent situated
near the company’s headquarters to hear some recent updates on the story since
the story has been broke, just so the story stays fresh and up to date.
The BBC News
Live Item formula is definitely the type we will use in our own Live Items, It
is an affective and informative way to educate the audience whilst not boring
them and maintaining a general level of engagement. Especially in lighter
stories, it’s perfect.
